When asked about the location of the British Virgin Islands, the response of Sir Winston Churchill was reportedly, “I have no idea, but I think as far as possible from the Isle of Man”. Today, the British Virgin Islands is somewhat better known, primarily as a yachting paradise, but increasingly as a premier jurisdiction for offshore business.
The more than 40 islands and cays are located 60 miles east of Puerto Rico and just next door to the U.S. Virgin Islands. They form part of the arc of Caribbean Islands, with the Bahamas to the north and extending down to Trinidad in the south.
Tortola, where the capital Road Town is located, has an area of 21 square miles. Its highest point, Mount Sage, rises 1,780 feet, while the island of Anegada is just 28 feet above sea level.
Road Town is the business centre of the BVI and the site of the High Court of Justice, the Magistrates Court and the Central Administration Complex, which houses the majority of the Government’s offices. The High Court Registry, the Financial Services Commission and the Registry of Corporate Affairs are also located here. |
